During the wet seasons, increased runoff from the Andean highlands causes the water levels to rise in the Amazon. This allows the Arowanas to leap from the water surface to pick off insects and birds from the overhanging branches, most of which were previously unreachable. Being excellent jumpers, some individuals are capable of leaping to heights of 6 ft/1.8 m, hence their nickname “water monkeys”
