The spirit bear is a white variant of the North American black bear.

The great bear rainforest is home to almost all of these bears, their numbers ranging from 400 to 1000 individuals.

Their color is caused by a recessive gene trait. They are not related to polar bears and they are not albino, their nose, eyes, lips and paws are dark colored.
