African painted dogs are one of the most lethal predators in the world, boasting an 85% hunting success rate.

There is a downside to being so successful: they often get their kills stolen by lions or hyenas.

You’ll often see them photographed with prey in their mouth while running, presumably to prevent it from being stolen

That only works with smaller prey though, larger prey like a cape buffalo that can’t be shredded and portioned out must be consumed as fast as possible.

Either scenario does not bode well for the aforementioned prey animal, they often begin to eat before it’s dead or even fully subdued, which is agonizing.
