I count 8 hyenas.
Even with numbers like that they’re still wary of a single lioness.
They could be worried about another lion they haven’t detected yet, OR they know that even with the advantage it will take a lot to take her out, and at least a few of them are getting fucked up in the process.
Lions just command that kind of respect.
