Volcanic Lightning

This is a real photo.

I know it looks like 2 anime characters are fighting somewhere nearby, but I assure you, this is 100% real.

They call this a dirty thunderstorm, an electrical discharge caused by a volcanic eruption rather than from an ordinary thunderstorm.

In any run of the mill thunderstorm, ice crystals collide and generate electric charges, which results in lightning.

During an eruption, cloud ash particles collide instead of ice crystals to produce the fun stuff.

This phenomenon is actually quite rare, except for at the Sakurajima volcano where these “storms” occur regularly.
