Aerial shot of some african painted wolves gorging themselves on a large kill.

African dogs hunt at an efficiency rate of 85 – 90 percent, making them one of the more successful hunters in the african wild.

The downside of that efficiency is that they end up taking down prey for other opportunistic predators, who instead of hunting for themselves will just overpower these smaller dogs and claim the kill.

Which is why in most videos featuring african dogs, they will start eating their prey well before they have killed it, and that’s because the rate at which they lose a kill is pretty high as well.
