A gull snacks on a turtle hatchling while hunting on Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

Even though scenes like this appear gruesome and cruel it is a vital part of the ecosystem and the turtles actually depends on birds for their own survival.

If it wasn’t for the birds droppings on the island fertilising the ground then the trees would not grow.

If there were no trees to hold the island together then the sand would we washed away in large storms and seas.

And if the sand washed away then there would be nowhere for the thousands of adult turtles to make their nests.

It is all part of the circle of life
