Northern pike reveals what he had for supper, a duckling.

In most lakes northern pike are the apex predator, which means that nothing else preys on them inside the boundaries of the lake.

A fisherman doesn’t factor into their food web, because to the best of my knowledge, fishermen don’t live in lakes.

On a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 would be a plant and 5 would be an apex predator, humans actually rank lower than you think:

2.21 – we are on the same level as a pig or an anchovy.

Why? The short answer is, because were omnivores – whereas top level predators strictly consume the meat of others, including animals that are predators themselves.

This human trophic level (HTL) study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America on November 4th 2013.

I’ll be putting it up in our story if you’d like to read more about it.
