“Herbivore”

Over the years there has been sparse anecdotal evidence of horses eating meat, and this is just adding to that.

Why they do it is anyone’s guess.

Deer – who are not even remotely related to horses – are also considered strictly herbivores and have also been observed eating birds and small rodents.

Researchers cite a lack of nutrients in their diet around the same time they are growing antlers, so if horses were related to deer, and grew antlers we might have a plausible, albeit extremely far-fetched explanation.

In Iceland, pasteurized horses are provided salted fish as a protein and mineral/salt supplement, it additionally provides vitamins A and D which is deficient in the hay native to that part of the world.

But they might just like the salt.

I’m sure there is an answer as to why some horses do this, but at this time I do not have it.
