A group of lioness gang up on a hartebeest.

Lionesses do most of a prides hunting, they are roughly 30% faster than male lions and better at stalking medium-sized prey – which makes up the majority of the pride’s diet.

Male lions do join in on the hunt when the pride goes after larger animals, but most of their time is spend maintaining the prides territory and dissuading would-be usurpers.

The lionesses of a pride stay together for life, are all related and they all partake in the hunting and rearing of the young.

Lions are the only cats that live in large social groups of up to 30 individuals, the size of a pride depends on the location and resources available to sustain them.

Less resources usually equals smaller pride size.
