Dynamite Tree

Scientific name hura crepitans – also known as the sandbox tree, the possomwood tree, the monkey pistol tree and the jabillo tree.

It is native to the tropical regions of North and South America.

It is considered one of the most dangerous plants in the world and should be treated as such.

For starters, the sap it secretes is toxic – South American tribesmen used to roll their darts in the trees sap to give their darts a little extra oompf.

If you were to somehow manage to get the sap in your eyes, your chances of going blind are pretty good – and ingestion of the dynamite tree fruit will immediately cause vomiting, diarrhea and severe abdominal pain.

Speaking of the fruit, there is another danger I’ve been leading up to this entire time – they explode(!) and they blast their flat seeds out like organic shrapnel.

When the fruits dry out, they crack open and launch their seeds up to 120ft (40m) from the tree at 230ft (70m) per second, or 160mph (257kph).
•
Just as a rough comparison of how fast the seeds move, the average speed of a skydiver in free fall is 120mph (193kph).

As a precaution, it’s best to steer clear of any dynamite tree you come across, and it goes without saying that you should never plant one of these trees anywhere, it is way too dangerous to have around people or animals.
