Closed-circuit surveillance footage of “farm dogs” taking down an intruding deer in northeast Thailand.

It is estimated that there are over 730,000 of these free-ranging dogs in Thailand, a lot of them are former pets abandoned by their owners and left to fend for themselves – which is exactly what they are doing in this video.

In Thailand, it is very common to “adopt” these dogs involuntarily: sometimes the simple act of buying a piece of land in a rural area makes you the defacto “owner” of your own pack, and having them around is often beneficial, they act as a built-in security system/early warning system for trespassers.

However, as with any other invasive species, its the local wildlife that pays the price.

In my opinion, since all dogs are descendants of wolves, this behavior should surprise absolutely no one – but as I’ve learned in the past, dogs are a very sensitive issue.

No matter how well I explain it, there is always a small but very loud contingent of people who will not accept the facts.

Here’s one: The global dog population is estimated around 900 million, and 83% of those are considered free-ranging.

I’m sure the comments on this one will be civil.
