A young spiny turtle (heosemsys spinosa) illustrating exactly why they should have been called the skilsaw turtle instead.

These seemingly razor sharp spines are an excellent example of an evolutionary trait developed to discourage predators from eating the turtle during the first few years of their life.

As the turtles mature and reach breeding age the spikes disappear, illustrating once again the priority placed upon reproduction and the continuation of the species built in to every living thing on Earth.
