Destiny’s Jaws
πŸ“Έ by @tomdyring_wildlifephoto

A hyena with her face inside a doomed wildebeest.

Spotted hyenas are misrepresented as the sneaky thief of the african wild.

The truth is, they are excellent hunters who kill the majority (up to 75%) of the prey they eat. Sure, if the opportunity to grab an easy meal presents itself they will take it – but so would every other predator on the plains.

Their bite force is roughly 1000lb per square inch (psi) which they put to good use, chewing, breaking and crushing up even the bones of their prey.

They are not above scavenging, in fact they can smell the decaying flesh of a corpse from up to 2.5 miles (4km) away.
