A herd of Indian axis deer suspend grazing operations as a melanistic leopard enters their field of vision.

Melanism is a pigmentation mutation that turns the skin and hair of an animal black. This mutation is highly beneficial to the estimated 11 percent of leopards and jaguars who have been blessed with this coloration, especially when hunting at night.

This particular black panther is a color variant of the Indian leopard, but the usage of the name “black panther” applies to every melanistic cat.

A melanistic jaguar in South America, a melanistic serval in Africa, and a melanistic cougar in North America would all share the name black panther.

However, I am not sure if the black panther moniker applies to black house cats, but I am curious.
