Hummingbird Moth

White-lined sphinx moth doing what she does.

These are one of the most abundant hawk moths in North America. Their hovering capability, along with their relative size and shape compared to a hummingbird makes it easy to understand their nickname.

They are large and have a stout furry body, a wingspan of 2 – 3 inches (5 – 7.5cm) and an extremely long tongue (proboscis) that they utilize to draw nectar from narrow, tubular flowers that are too deep for other insects to reach.

Some species of hawk moth have a proboscis that measures up to 12 inches (30cm) in length – by far the longest tongue of any known moth or butterfly species.
