A lioness unhappy with her allotment of buffalo asscheek

It is no secret that a pride of lions contains far more adult females than it does males. They are usually related in some way – sisters, cousins, aunts, daughters – and their hierarchy determines their role in the pride.

Lions are unique in their need for social interaction with one another. Most cat species prefer to spend their adult lives alone, with only one mouth to feed.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways of life, one of the main benefits of a pride is group hunting, allowing lions to take down prey much larger than they would be able to manage on their own.

In this photo, the black dam pride has taken down a cape buffalo – an absolute mountain of an animal that would be very difficult to subdue without teamwork.
