Cheetah are gazelle specialists.

Their speed is thought to be the result of an evolutionary arms race, as the faster gazelles would be harder to catch. Those gazelles would pass on their speedy genes, the next generation of gazelles in turn would be minutely quicker, extrapolate that a few hundred generations and boom – you have an animal that can reach a top speed of 50mph (80km/h)

In order to keep up, the cheetah made the same evolutionary adjustments to keep up with their favourite fast food – if they can hit 50mph, the cheetah would obviously have to be faster to run them down, which would explain why cheetahs have an average top speed of 60mph (96km/h)

I have no sources for any of this, just throwing out what was floating around in my head when I watched this. So if it doesn’t make any sense, you know why.
