Grey heron grabs a mouse with her chopsticks

When I saw this photo it got me thinking: just how many of these unfortunate rodents does a heron eat in a day in order to be satisfied?

From what I’ve read online, these large birds are capable of consuming roughly a pound (0.453kg) of fish per day.

Your average mouse weighs around 1.6 ounces (44 grams) and based on the “pound per day” notion I figure a heron hunting in a field would need to track down, capture and kill 8 – 10 to be satiated.

So, you know… now we all know that.
