Naegleria Fowleri

The brain-eating amoeba

On Saturday, officials in Lake Jackson Texas requested an emergency declaration from the state due to the discovery of n.fowleri in the public water system.

Naegleria fowleri causes a disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis, which is a brain infection that leads to the destruction of brain tissue. It lives in bodies of warm fresh water and invades the nervous system through the nose.

N.fowleri normally subsist on bacteria, but when they find themselves in a location lacking their favourite food (the human brain for instance) they settle for the abundance brain tissue all around them.

The survival rate of primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is only 5 – 10%, making the mortality rate 90 – 95%.

The good news: as mentioned above, the amoeba attacks the human nervous system via the nose, so if you can avoid getting water up there you’ll more than likely be fine.

For example: if you’re using a netty pot where n.fowleri has been detected, either stop using it or boil the water 1st. Let it cool down before pouring it up your nose.

Remember:

If you drink it, you’re fine.
If it gets in your ear, you’ll be ok.
If it swims up your dickhole, again totally fine.
If it gets up your nose, you’re the opposite of fine.
