Lioness and a gemsbok calf she pulled from the womb of its recently deceased mother.

Lions are the only cats (with the exception of male cheetah coalitions) that live in groups. The size of each pride may vary, but they max out at around 40 cats and consist of mostly female lions.

All of the prides lionesses are related, and female cubs commonly remain with the pride as they age.

Young males will eventually branch out and establish their own prides by killing or casting out the dominant male of another group of lions.

Once the takeover is complete, the new leader of the pride will systematically murder the old males offspring, so he can pass on and nurture his own bloodline instead of the ousted ones.
