The gull family has a worldwide distribution, they are found on every continent including Antarctica and the high Arctic.

Most of them are ground nesting carnivores that will take live prey or scavenge, depending in their location.

Opportunism is their specialty.

Gulls are some of the hardest birds to identify correctly. Some types of gulls have different plummage depending on whether or not they are breeding, and this breeding or non-breeding plummage changes throughout the seasons.

Adding a bit more challenge to proper identification is the fact that gulls sometimes crossbreed with other gull species, which creates hybrids that reflect the look and characteristics of each parent bird.
