Dressed Up Like A Dog’s Dinner
πŸ“½ by @johan_van_zyl_photography

A pack of african painted wolves haul down an antelope and reduce it to ribbons in a very short amount of time.

While this clip is especially brutal, this stuff happens everyday. They amount of suffering experienced in the wild on a daily basis is absolutely incomprehensible.

Even if they are the most successful hunters when it comes to catching prey, african painted dogs are not the best at keeping it, as there are always a few practicing kleptoparasites near by.

More often than not, they get chased off of their quarry by lions or hyenas, who might be alerted by the noise and show up to investigate. Lions and hyenas will also kill wild dogs when they can, so they need to be especially careful.

All of the above is meant to explain why the dogs don’t really have time to kill their food before they feed. They need to eat, and fast. They’ve been conditioned to gorge themselves as quickly as possible because escape is always in the back of their mind.

If you’d like to see the extra 33 seconds I had to cut off the end of this in order to put it up, check out our story.
