A pair of polar bears consuming a seal on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.

Svalbard is just about as far north as you can go on our planet. It is technically a part of Norway, but even Norwegian citizens must show their passports to enter the archipelago.

Due to the dry air, the minimal precipitation, plus the fact that less that 10% of the landmass has any vegetation, Svalbard is considered an arctic desert.

As of 2012, a law was passed requiring anyone traveling outside of the human settlements to carry a firearm for the sole purpose of deterring/scaring off polar bears.

This is due to the fact these large hypercarnivores outnumber human beings in Svalbard.

Polar bears are the apex of the apex, the largest land predator on earth, and traveling between settlements in Svalbard without a weapon could quite literally be the signature on your own death certificate.

Svalbard is a crazy place, I hope to visit one day.
