Marabou storks comb the area around a zebra carcass, looking for a bite to eat.

They call them nightmare birds, or undertaker birds, because they are often found around dead things, killed by other animals, there to exploit the kill for their own benefit.

Thankfully, their prosperity benefits us in the same way that vultures do: by ridding the landscape of harmful things like parasites, flatworms and tapeworms, they prevent these parasitic organisms from making their way into humans.

These birds are also capable hunters, but unless it’s breeding season (a time when they try to “eat fresh” especially when it comes to feeding their nestlings) they can more often than not be found in the vicinity of something rotting in the hot sun.
