Whitetail buck showing off his pedicles (antler roots) after dropping his weapons.

The primary function of antlers is to spar/rut with other males in order to sort out and secure mating rights each year. Once this business has concluded, the antlers serve no real purpose and are shed.

Not long after they are dropped, the buck begins growing new ones for next year’s rut. They grow back at a rate of 1/4 (.63cm) to 1/2in (1.27cm) per day, in just over a month they can regenerate up to 1.5 feet (.45m) of new rack. Antlers are one of the fastest growing bone formations in the natural world.

Fluctuations in testosterone levels are cited as the reason for both the cycle of rapid growth before the rut and the involuntary disarmament of these creatures when its over.
