Can’t Win Them All

A fallen sub adult lion, killed and devoured by spotted hyenas

When lions hunt down and murder a hyena, they rarely eat it. Spotted hyenas are in direct competition with lions, so shuffling a few off of the playing field can only help them.

Some theories as to why they are more likely to leave a hyena to die rather than consume it might have to do with what hyenas actually taste like.

I have never tasted hyena, or lion for that matter, but it is alleged that lions hate the taste of their opponents so much that they simply will not eat them.

This distaste for the flesh of their biggest rival is not a shared position, as spotted hyenas are (obviously) more than willing to clean up after they murder a solitary lion.
