Black racer snake engulfs a broad headed skink for lunch

Black racer snakes are non-venomous and active during daylight hours. They are classified as constrictor, but they are more likely to smother/suffocate prey by crushing them into the ground than by the classic constrictor method of coiling around them and squeezing.

They will kill and eat anything they can overpower, including rodents, frogs, toads, lizards, smaller snakes and birds. Black racer snakes are common prey for hawks, who spot them from above and drop down to capture them. This attack style effectively neutralizes the snakes only evasive tactic, their speed.
