Legendary Lunch

Polar bear feasting on a captured ocean unicorn (narwhal)

Unlike fish, narwhals and other ocean mammals are unable to draw oxygen out of the water, which means they need to pop up to the surface every 25 minutes or so.

If the surface ice is too thick for them to break or without sufficient gaps for breathing, narwals can become entrapped under the ice and drown.

Polar bears are aware of this. They have been observed camping out by these perforations in the ice pack hoping to snag an easy lunch.

There is no evidence whatsoever of them digging breathing holes to entice prey to participate in this morbid game of whack-a-whal. Yet.
