Grizzly bear absorbs an elk

The digestive system of a grizzly bear is optimized for the consumption of flesh. However, with the exception of polar bears and panda bears, the remaining bear species exist via omnivorous means.

The individual geography of the bear tends to dictate what it eats. The flesh of another might be preferred, but it’s not always accessible, so bears will make ends meet by eating roots, nuts, grass, various insects, a multitude of berries and other plant matter.

In fact, some bears exist on a diet that consists of 80 – 90% plant matter. More often than not these are inland bears, they are typically smaller than their coastal relatives.
