Nile crocodile chews on the lifeless body of a baby river horse

Also known as hippopotamus, who believe it or not share a common ancestor with whales, dolphins and porpoises.

The fossils of this 4-legged water-loving animal that diverged into two separate life forms over the course of 40 million years serves to fill the gap in the hippo/whale lineage.

This theory states that up to 37 different land locked species related to hippos spawned from this single branch, but died out over 2.5 million years ago, leaving the hippopotamus as the last remaining land-based relative.
