Mucked Up

Two lions illustrate just how important a carcass is, even when it’s covered in muck.

Lions only have around 470 total taste buds on their tongue, this helps when you’re cleaning mud and other grossness off of your dinner the only way you can: by licking it.

When the vast majority of your diet is meat, extra tastebuds would be a waste. As long as the lion can detect bitter flavors, which will aid it in avoiding rancid meat, the rest of its palette can be devoted to tasting flesh and water.

The presence of tiny papillae which gives the cat’s tongue its sandpaper-like texture, cuts down on taste-bud real estate even further, but gives lions the ability to strip flesh off bone just by licking it.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a picky eater in the pride.
